Dated milestones from Count Rumford's essay to Hario's paper filter system.
In 1812 Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, published an essay describing an early drip coffee device. It is the earliest dated point on the record and it already names the mechanism: water passing through grounds.
In 1908 Melitta Bentz invented the commercial paper coffee filter in Germany, and Melitta introduced paper filter systems the same year. Further Melitta systems followed in 1932, 1936 and 1965, and Chemex introduced its system in 1941.

In 1944 Willy Brand developed an automatic drip brewer utilizing circular paper filters in Switzerland. The circular filter is the shape that the cone-based manual routine expects, and the machine simply pours for you.
In 1954 the Wigomat, one of the first electric drip brewers invented by Gottlob Widmann, was patented in Germany. It carries the same filter logic into an electric appliance.
In 2004 Hario introduced its paper filter system, the most recent dated point. The record spans Germany, Switzerland and Japan, and drip brew coffee makers largely replaced the coffee percolator along the way.
